Portrait Painting Project 2012 - Phase 2

So as we move into another year so the PPP moves into it's second phase.

However for part two of the project it is not just acrylic painted portraits, I am going to be producing portraits in a selection of mediums; pencil, watercolour, acrylic and Posca pens and sometimes all four at once!

I am opening the doors again to anyone and everyone who would like a lovely portrait of themselves or would like a portrait of a loved one or a hated one?! Whatever floats your boat.

£70 for A4
£150 for A3 + Postage and Packing (depending on where you live in the World)

Portrait Painting Project - The Brothers Hovey

Before Christmas I got into a portrait painting project in order to test my skills and improve my painting techniques with Acrylics. Below are a selection of portrait that were commissioned for a certain mother, no not Mary, but my Mother, as the three paintings are of me and my two brothers.

More to come in the new year as my project was very popular and I have lots more portraits set to paint.

I also plan on working in Oils which will be a lot of fun, but will also mean I will have to find a bigger studio as not too kill everyone with the stench of Linseed oil.

2012 New Beginnings

Well what a year 2011 was aye. A lot of things changed for me creatively and my ideas of how I wanted to produce work altered, I felt that it was right for me at the time to create an alter ego, who turned out to be TwistedLoaf. I thought that, as the work I was creating was so different I needed complete separation from Tom Hovey work as I felt no-one would be able to make the link between the two and get confused and fall off their chair or start knowing on their keyboard or something...
So anyway I focussed all my energies into Twistedloaf and pushed it as hard and as far as I could. Another reason for me pushing it so hard was because of my involvement in The Dead Sea Mob which has been the most interesting, challenging and of my working life so far and we are only one year old. My DSM brothers and sisters are insanely talented and have pushed me to up my game on a constant basis and I can't wait for all the shows and exhibitions we are going to put on in 2012. And by the way our first show is at the enigmatic Tara McPherson's amazing Cotton Candy Machine Gallery in Brooklyn, New York Fucking City!!!
I have lot's of things planned for 2012 and how I want to mix things up creatively, I am very excited about how I am going to overcome the hurdles I am setting for myself. I will be posting up lots of Work In Progress of paintings, illustrations and everything in-between as much as I possibly can, but importantly I will only be blogging here and not on Twistedloaf.com. I haven't really decided the full mechanics of how everything is going to work but I am in the midst of designing the new website. So please stick with me and let me know how shit or awesome you think everything is going.

Portrait Painting Project - The Perfect Christmas Present!

Hello lovely people.
So as it is the festive period of joy; celebrating turkeys and sprouts, I thought that I would open up the studio and do a portrait project.

So if you want a portrait of yourself or of a loved one (or someone you hate?) then drop me line and send me a good quality photo to tom@tomhovey.co.uk or scream@twistedloaf.com and I will send you the original.

The Price will be:
£40 per painting or £70 for two + Postage and Packing (depending on where you live in the World)

I am painting all in Acrylic ont A4, 300gsm, 140lb, Canvas Textured Paper.

The Dead Sea Mob - A Shot Across The Bows - Show review... kinda

So in case you hadn't heard The Dead Sea Mob have sent out a warning shot across the Seven Seas.
A Shot Across the Bows - It started on Tuesday last week...

...there was talk among the mariners and dockworkers that troupe of beastly marauders were gathering in Soho drawing unearthly incarnations on the walls and hanging the most perverse scrolls and prints seen by man...

The word on the decks of most ships is that they consist of four Un-Godly weathered sea bastards going by the names of Godmachine, Drew Millward, Tom J Newell and TwistedLoaf.

All driven mad after being shipwrecked at sea for an age. Since their eventual rescue they have been concocting a plan to gather a gang of like-minded sea dogs to travel the high seas drawing and painting filth, spreading filth and disease wherever they go...

Reports say that their first meeting happened on Thursday 24th March 2011... The details are too full of fear, loathing, bile and disgusting acts of depravity that they would make the Marquis De Sade blush.

Some photographs have come to light... but if you are of a gentle persuasion please take a seat and have a stiff drink in hand whilst viewing the pictures...

Artist & Illustrators Magazine - Im bloody in it!!

Was lucky enough to be featured in Artist & Illustrators Magazine this month for my work for Popshot Magazine.
I was part of the Painting For Poetry Section, the quote above is from the poet whose poem I illustrated.
This is the first time I have read any kind of response to my illustration from her, I was blown away by her response and am really happy with how it made her feel. Although that feeling was sadness, sadness was how I felt when I read the poem.
So I'm glad that my interpretation of her amazing words was received in the right way and the way that I intended.
Please go and buy the magazine, I'm sharing a page with some old geezer called Peter Blake or summink! Suppose there is some other good stuff in it but really who cares cause my bit's the best!!

90 Minutes Painting - Diaegeo - Man United Foundation Auction

I was kindly asked along with 1o other artists to produce a piece of artwork in 90 minutes that will be part of a blind auction in the Diageo hospitality box at Old Trafford over the duration of the season. All the proceeds of the money raised will go to the Manchester United Foundation, which is a pretty awesome cause!
This project was especially amazing as being born in Wales I am a die-hard United fan so to have work on show in Old Trafford is well good!Some of the other artists include Mike Lythgoe, Gemma Correll and some others I don't know about yet!

So I as I promised I started again. I went for a a different colour combination this time and I think it looks alright. I am still going to re-paint using previous colours but still I thinks that this one works so at least I didn't fuck this one up aswell.

I really liked this image that came from a 5 minute brainstorm sketch I boshed out the other night. It made me want to see how many different media I could try and re-imagine it in. So started painting it out in Acrylics tonight. I think the combination of boiling studio, red wine and lack of practice recently with paint, mean that since taking the above pic I kinda fucked it up so I'm just about to start again. I usually find that 2nd and 3rd attempts turn out better, so I'll let you know in a few hours if I've fucked it up again.

Tate Modern Celebrates 10 Years

Checked out the Tate Modern today, was quite cool to see all the local artists and gallery's invited into the Turbine Hall. There was some typically bonkers work happening, but my highlight was seeing random tramps drinking Olde English and singing karaoke.

Like most people I spent Saturday afternoon up a hill taking pictures of trees here are a few of my favourites.
Thanks to some jolly old volcano (who shall remain nameless) the skies were clear with no clouds or planes so just blue skies for miles. Good times.

Walked about all in love and stuff.
Saw a derilict castle surrounded by loads of barbed wire.
I love the fact that we have loads of castle's just lying about the place in dis-repair and no-one gives a shit. It's well bum.
